Emerging Investigator

Dr Ranjit Thakuria of Department of Chemistry has been selected as an Emerging Investigator in Crystal Growth & Design by the journal Crystal Growth & Design of the American Chemical Society. He is among 22 such young crystallographars across the globe to be featured by the journal. Dr Ranjit Thakuria has joined Gauhati University in 2014 and working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry.

The aim of Crystal Growth & Design is to stimulate cross-fertilization of knowledge among scientists and engineers working in the fields of crystal growth, crystal engineering, and the industrial application of crystalline materials. In this virtual collection, you will find 22 publications with featured authors from nine countries, which exemplify this aim and reflect state-of-the-art progress in these fields. The scope of science and application in this virtual issue is truly representative of the inclusiveness and diversity which are hallmarks of CGD. Technology Incubation Centre

In our strive to nurture talent and encourage innovation, a milestone is being achieved today. Gauhati University, a premier institute of higher education in the Northeastern region of the country, is signing an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Oil India Limited (OIL), the famed Government of India Enterprise and the first establishment to explore oil in our country, to setup a Technology Incubation Centre at GU.

The MoU is being signed today on Tuesday, 19th March, 2019 by the Honourable Vice Chancellor of GU, Dr Mridul Hazarika and dignitaries of the OIL, today at the Office of the Vice Chancellor, GU.

MoU Between Gauhati University and Oil India Limited

Gauhati University and Oil India Limited (OIL) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Gauhati University on 19th March, 2019 to extend the facility of Technology Incubation Centre at Gauhati University as part of Flagship National Programme of part of Start Up India. Gauhati University has already constituted a Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) which is working towards fostering industry-academia linkages and formulating an ecosystem for startups and incubator. The Registrar (i/c), Gauhati University, Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta was the signatory on behalf of Gauhati University while Executive Director, Corporate Affairs, OIL , Dr. Rahul Dasgupta, signed on behalf of Oil India Limited. The MoU signing event was attended by Dr. Mridul Hazarika, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University, Deans, Director GUIST, Prof. Utpal Sarma, Coordinator, IQAC, Prof Parag Phukan, Prof Kandarpa Kumar Sarma, Coordinator GUTIC, Prof. Madhurjya Bora, HoD, Physics, Prof. Pradeep Phokan, Coordinator IPR Cell, GU, Prof. Jogen Kalita, Director UGC-HRDC etc. Mr. M. C. Nihalini, C.G.M R&D, D.R. Banerjee, C.G.M. & Asset Manager -W, N. Mathur CGM CoEES, S. Yamdo, GM Resv CoEES, R. Goswami CGM-PHQ, S. Goswami GM Operations PHQ were among other who attended the event. The MoU has been an outcome of the Industry Academia Interaction Programme held at Gauhati University in April, 2018 with the initiative of Shri Utpal Bora, CMD-OIL and Dr. Mridul Hazarika, Vice Chancellor, Gauahti University.

GU Faculty Member Bags National Award

Dr Ankuran Dutta

Dr Ankuran Dutta, Head of the Department of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University has been awarded the National Award for Science and Technology Communication, 2018. The award is conferred annually by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India to individuals or institutions for outstanding contribution in the field of science and technology communication and promoting scientific temper which has created significant impact in the country during the last five years.

Dr Dutta was awarded in the Category F (Outstanding Efforts in Science & Technology Communication in the Electronic Medium) is the first Assamese science communicator in the region who has been conferred with this award for his consistent and collective promotion of science, technology, risk and health communication through community radio in India and other South Asian countries for decades today.

The award carries a citation, a memento and cash award of Rs two lakh. Dr Ankuran Dutta is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism at GU and is also the Managing Trustee of Dr Anamika Ray Memorial Trust (ARMT), which works in the domain of Science Communication in Assam.



GU Bagged Runner-Up Prize in East Zone Youth Festival 2019

Gauhati University Cultural Team has received overall 2nd Best Team (Runner-Up) at East zone inter University Youth Festival 2019 at Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga (Bihar). The festival was held under the aegis of Association of Indian Universities where the GU team brought laurels to Assam and its people by winning the accolade of being the 2nd Best University by bagging numerous awards at 13 different events.

Commencing from the 3rd of January and concluding on 7th of January 2019, this Youth Festival witnessed Gauhati University winning the 1st Prize for Mime for the 7th consecutive year under the guidance of Kuldeep Patgiri. Also, Western Vocal Group Song won the 1st position directed by Prandip Das, Folk Orchestra directed by Manoj Sharma and Indian Chorus Group Song got 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. The One-Act Play directed by Jyoti Narayan Nath bagged the 2nd position, Debate (Manaswita Mahanta and Tania Roy) got the 2nd position, Cartooning (Gyana Pratim Dev Sharma) got 2nd position, Solo Classical Dance (Tina Medhi) got 3rd position, Spot Painting and Spot Photography (Jaydhar Boro) got 2nd position in both, and the Quiz team received the 3rd prize. Also, Gauhati University was declared as the winner in the Cultural rally as well.

For their stupendous performance in this honourable platform, the hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University Dr. Mridul Hazarika, Registrar i/c Prof. Noni Gopal Mahanta, Director, Students’ Welfare, Dr. Ranjan Kumar Kakati and Secretary of University Classes, Dr. Hemanta Kumar Nath extend their congratulations and best wishes to the team. The Gauhati University team was escorted by Sri Ashwini Kumar Deka and Kuldeep Patgiri as Team Manger & the students who participated in the various events includes Hirak Jyoti Sharma, Pallabi Devi, Dipannita Das, Tribeni Bujarboruah, Ananya Sharma, Bipanshi Das Saikia, Arunabh Jyoti Malakar, Rinku Das, Krishnan Jyoti Baruah,Biplab Gogoi, Deepjyoti Kalita, Hritik Nath, Bitupon Saikia, Jeetumoni Kalita, Jhunakangkan Bhuyan, Anju Hazarika, Mounita Borah, Nilangana Bora, Baishalee Chamuah, Porismita Kashyap, Tina Medhi, Dhrubajyoti Barman, Rubul Kalita, Bijit Das, Manaswita Mahanta, Tania Roy, Archana Sharma, Trishna Devi, Anurag Kalyan Borgohain, Bhupesh Kumar Deka, Jaydhar Boro, Surya Kumar Saikia, Gyana Pratim Dev Sharma along with the accompanists Arup Kalita, Nava Jyoti Kashyap, Champak Bordoloi and Prandeep Das.
