Gauhati University (GU) is the first, oldest and one of the renowned University of the entire Northeastern
region. It was established in 1948 as a teaching cum affiliating University. The University is located in Jalukbari  with the  mighty river Brahmaputra flowing by on the northern side. The Department of Biotechnology, was established in 1993 and has been continuously engaged in research and education in the field. The Institutional Biotech Hub was established with the grant received from Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India in the Department of Biotechnology, Gauhati University. The I-HUB provides resources for carrying out training / research activities and is also engaged in holding conferences, seminars and workshops for the development of trained manpower.

Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) is a premier Government funded arts organization. It is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture. Through diverse programmes of research, publication, training, creative activities and performance, the IGNCA seeks to encompass and preserve the distributed fragments of Indian art and culture. The fundamental approach of the Centre is all its work will be both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary.

Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology   (IASST) was established as a premier research institute by the Assam Science Society and supported by the Assam State Government as its only R&D institute till March 2009.  Subsequently IASST was  taken over by Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India in  March 2009. Dr Dorothy  C Hodgkin,  Nobel Laureate came over to inaugurate the Institute on 3rd November, 1979.  IASST is engaged in multidisciplinary research activities  in frontier areas of Science and Technology.

University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) is the first State private University on Science and Technology in the entire North East India which is sponsored by ERD Foundation, Guwahati.  The university was established by the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya Act, 2008 of the Govt of Meghalaya, India. The University is empowered by The University Grants Commission, to award degrees as specified by the UGC under section 22 of the UGC act1956. The University is recognized by UGC and is approved by AICTE,  NCTE and MHRD.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati was established as a result of the Assam Accord in 1994. It is the 6th of the IITs established by the Govt. of India. It is located in North Guwahati and is one of the top ranked Institute in the country. The institute is engaged in cutting edge research and  training of highly qualified and skilled engineers.

North East Biotechnological Association (NEBA), was established in 1998 to fulfill  the interest of people associated with the broad horizon of biotechnology. The head office is situated at Department of Biotechnology, Gauhati University.
