Friday Seminar

Friday Seminar is a weekly event of the Physics Department, where talks (usually of one hour duration) are delivered by Faculty Members, Students, Research Scholars, and Invited Speakers on various topics, ranging from present-day research to classroom-level (pedagogical) talks. There are also Student Seminars, which are usually given by postgraduate (MSc) students and they, in general, talk on some basic topics of interest.

We welcome any interested person to these talks, which is held every working Friday at 14:30 hours (2:30 PM) at the Physics Gallery. Complimentary refreshments are served at the end of the talks.

Title   Quantum Computing - Welcome to the Future!
Speaker  Kalyan Shandilya, Physics Department, GU
  Type Student Seminar
  Date Friday, 1 November, 2019
  Time 2:30 PM
  Venue Physics Gallery, GU

Abstract

Quantum computing refers to the use of quantum mechanical phenomena like superposition, entanglement, etc, to perform computation. Traditional computing works with bits, i.e. all information is processed and exchanged in 1, 0 / true-false signal which comprises a bit. In a quantum computer, qubits are used instead, which is a contraction of the words quantum bits. The speaker will be highlighting the working of a quantum computer, its necessity, applications, present state, and future prospects.

Kalyan is a student of the department doing his MSc Physics, currently in 3rd semester. He completed his Bachelor's Degree from Darrang College, Tezpur in 2018. He and his team bagged the 1st prize in the Model Making Competition held on Foundation Day 2019, Dept. of Physics, GU and also in the Poster Making Competition at Cotton University held on National Science Day 2019. He is also interested in music and had won the 2nd prize in Alcheringa 2019, IIT Guwahati along with his team, representing Gauhati University.

Refreshments will be served at the end of the talk
