Prof Dhirendra Nath Buragohian

• Had early education in Golaghat Govt. High School and Cotton College Guwahati (1957-1959), Securing first rank in both the Matriculation (1957) and Intermediate Science (1959) examinations of Gauhati University.

• Joined IIT Bombay in 1959 (2nd batch of students), and obtained B.Tech. (Hons) in Civil Engineering (1963), M.Tech. (Structures)(1965) and Ph.D. (1969) from IIT Bombay.

• Did Post-doctoral Research in University of Wales, Swansea, in the U.K. (1973-74).

• Joined the Faculty of Civil Engg. in IIT Bombay in 1968 and worked there till 1994, becoming Professor of Civil Engg. in 1978, then Dean of Planning and then Head of the Department.
  
  At IIT Bombay, besides teaching, publications, and guidance of a large number of Ph.D and M.Tech. students, he delivered Special In-House Lecture Courses on Computer Analysis of Structures, during 1969-1978, to organisations, such as, PWD Maharashtra, Bombay Municipal Corporation, Kamani Engineering Corporation, BARC Training School, Lloyds Register of Shipping, Res. & Dev. Estt.(Engrs.), Dighi, Pune, and ONGC, Bombay.

• Carried out a large number of Consultancy Projects for different organizations such as BARC, AERB, BHEL, Post & Telegraphs, ONGC, Indian Register of Shipping, Gammon, STUP, HCC, various establishments of DRDO, Space Applications Centre, various State PWD’s to name a few.
  
  During this period, also developed a general purpose software BSAFE (Structural Analysis using Finite Elements) for static and dynamic analysis of all types of structures which was later acquired by CSI, Germany in 1989, who were marketing it in Germany under the name FEBA.

• Came back to Guwahati in February 1994 as Project Director at IIT Guwahati Assam Society to set up the sixth Indian Institute of Technolgy at Guwahati, served as the Founder Director of IIT Guwahati from July 1994, till his superannuation in 2003.

Immediately after leaving IITG

• He worked as Advisor to Srimanta Sankar Academy Trust for setting up the first Private Engineering College in the North East, GCIMT at Azara, Guwahati (2003-2006).

• In 2005, Joined as COO, Real Estate Divn., Guwahati, Brahmaputra Consortium Ltd., Delhi, for building the first self-contained luxury Housing Complex in Guwahati (Spanish Garden) at Zoo Road, Guwahati.

• In 2007, shifted to Pune to work as Chief Technical Officer, CE-N, Civil Engineering Network Systems Pvt Ltd.,with Head Office at Bochum, Germany. (2007-2014)
  
  At CE-N, worked on various international projects in Canada, USA, France, Italy and Saudi Arabia, on structural analysis and design of Power Plant Structures, and Special Structures, notable amongst which are the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute in Las Vegas and the Louis Vuitton Foundation Building in Paris.

Awards & Achievements

• The KKB National Award for Science & Technology for 2006, instituted by the Kamal Kumari Barua Foundation, Kolkata.

• The Distinguished Alumnus  Award of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, in its Golden Jubilee Year, 2008-2009.

• Featured under the caption “Engineering Legends of India”, by the Projects Monitor Magazine, vol.12, issue 41, Feb. 2013.

• Professor Emeritus, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, 2014.

• Professor Emeritus, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, 2015.

• The Eminent Engineering Personality Award of the Institution of Engineers (India), December, 2015.

• The ERDF Excellence Award-2015, by the Educational Research and Development Foundation Guwahati, January, 2016.

• Citation of Honour by Institute Advanced Study in Science and Technolgy, Guwahati, November, 2017.

• Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa by National Institute of Technology, Meghalaya, 2021.
